It takes courage to teach, to engage with students in such a way that they may supersede my pursuit of education. For teaching is less about content and more about guiding an individual's thoughts about handling new information and instilling a sense of responsibility with that new message. The courage to teach also deflects our innate desires to selfishly absorb new information; in the right environment, it demands that we think about how new knowledge changes the world around us. If after an encounter in the classroom, on the service field, or in the workplace a student is not moved to change their world through new ideas and service, I have not completed my assignment.
